WHY THE GUPTA EMPIRE CAME TO AN END

THE DOWNFALL

  • Military defeats
    • Rebellious attacks from Pushyamitras and territories were consistently invaded by the Huna during Kumaragupta I rule
  • Devalued money
    • Value of currency dropped, meaning the merit on which it traded with it's countries was going to be more expensive.
  • Withering leadership
    • Successor and son Skandragupta ended rebellions and territorial attacks but at the expense of all the empire’s resources
    • Skandragupta was considered the final significant leader of the Gupta empire, and following his death in 467, a series of weak rulers came after him
    • By 500 CE, most of the empire was overrun by Huna due to poor leadership
